Y M C A Campsite – Nilshi

A place where your cup of nature will never fill. Marked by Silence, pristine air quality, the sound of the air (breeze) blowing through the tall trees that have come up all around the property, the continuous chirping and whistling of birds. It is almost an island, a small hill (around 40 acres) surrounded by the Andhra lake (a Tata Lake). When you enter the property, your heart rate automatically slows down .. … (of course, provided that one has a receptive mind … .. you have to leave your small mind behind, whatever that means … …). In short, it is a tranquil place and much more.

It is around 40 km from the main road, the Mumbai – Pune highway, 175 km from Mumbai, around 75 km from Lonavala. It is at a height of 2100 feet, as good as any hill station, in fact, even better, as there are no concrete structures for miles. It is not for the city man who goes on holiday, wanting to drag some of his city pleasures along with him. It is comfortable, but no comforts, good food for the palette and a feast for the heart. It is an ideal campsite for children, of course they have to be guided, cannot be let loose. It is also a great place for Retreats and prayer. Children revel in these surroundings, plenty of open space to run and play. It has a number of adventure activities like different rope walks, rock climbing, kayaking and many more fun activities. The surrounding hills, up to 1500 feet higher than the campsite, with good forest, offer the trekker ample opportunities. Hunting by locals still takes place.(Photos attached are a proof of this.)

When thinking of this camp site, one automatically thinks of the man who spent much of his time, imagination and skills to make it what it is. Unfortunately, this man Melvin Louis is no more, passed away at a young age of 65, about 2 years ago. He was a camper at heart, dedicated to the service of people. He spent his entire working life with the YMCA. A photo of him singing camp songs with the guitar is below. I have given him the name King Camper.

My photos attached will speak more that my words …. come and feel with the place.
