Ponsonby spring is portable, drinkable and has a steady flow even in the summer months. It is located on the western edge of the plateau a short distance to the south of Nala spring. It is in deep jungle situated near the Old Gymkhana compound which is now used as a dumping ground for solid waste. Thus there is a good chance that the water will be getting contaminated. As one can see in the photos attached, someone has built a cement open tank to lift water from here and transport it via means of a pipe for use.
Captain Ponsonby was one of the pioneers in the creation of Matheran, he did a survey of the so called plateau.
